Garnacho drops big Man Utd exit hint after Chelsea transfer links
Manchester United were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham in the Europa League final on Wednesday night to cap off their worst season in 51 years, with Alejandro Garnacho hinting that he could leave the club
Alejandro Garnacho has hinted at a potential departure from Manchester United following Wednesday night's disappointing Europa League final loss to Tottenham.
United were left to rue a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Spurs in Bilbao, marking their worst season in over half a century. A gritty first-half goal from Brennan Johnson swung the advantage to Tottenham, granting north London the spoils of Champions League football.
In a tension-filled match, the Red Devils nearly snatched an equaliser during added time with a Luke Shaw header, but ultimately, they faced a tough night in Spain.
Garnacho, initially named as a substitute at San Mames, was introduced for the last 20 minutes on the flank, attempting to inject some impact. Despite his efforts, he found no way past a resilient Tottenham defence.
The young Argentine had been a regular starter for United in the Europa League, featuring in 10 out of the preceding 14 games, yet Mason Mount got the nod to play alongside Amad, just behind the frontman this time around.
Following the game, Garnacho spoke to ESPN Argentina (via the Manchester Evening News) in the mixed zone, evidently frustrated. He remarked: "I played every round to help the team reach the final, and today I only got 20 minutes... I don't know.
"I'm going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens next."
Furthermore, he lamented the overall campaign: "This season was s***, losing the final and not beating anyone in the league."
With the transfer window looming, Garnacho stands as one of the Manchester United squad members who may be sold to generate funds.
The Argentina international piqued the interest of Chelsea and Napoli in January, and his situation is anticipated to be closely watched over the summer.
football.london understands that the Blues are still interested in the Manchester United attacker, as well as the likes of Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens ahead of the summer transfer window.
