Stevie Wonder, 74, Makes Rare Red Carpet Appearance, Appearing at the Met Gala for the First Time in Glittering Cape

Stevie Wonder made his Met Gala debut on Monday, sporting a glittery cape — with a glittery, head-turning cape — as he marked the occasion with loved ones by his side.

Stevie Wonder may very well have the whole best-dressed thing "Signed, Sealed, Delivered!"

The music icon, 74, made his Met Gala debut on Monday, May 5, walking the carpet alongside his family and making a major statement on the museum's iconic stars with his long, glittering train.

Wonder's train was part of the cape that finished off his outfit, which he paired with a matching jacket, black trousers, his signature shades and a black beret, plus jewelry by De Beers and David Yurman. For the event, Wonder was joined by family, wife Tomeeka Robyn Bracy and son Kailand Morris, who matched his energy in black looks — all by Sergio Hudson.

The look was of Wonder's take on the night's “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" theme, which coincides with the museum's spring 2025 exhibition, inspired by guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.

Speaking with E! about why it took him so long to make a Met Gala debut, Wonder made it clear: "I'm just here," he said.

"Very happy to celebrate Black designers and their ability to create consistently, since the beginning of time ... style," Wonder added, sharing that the cape's designer, Sergio Hudson, was "consistently great."

The 25-time Grammy winner also caught up with Vogue on the red carpet, explaining that "God has celebrated what we have done since the beginning of time."

"Since we were created, we've created style, whether be it music, whether be it dance, whether be it the most important thing, love," Wonder said. "And I just say, we have to commit ourselves, yes, Black men all over the world, Black people all over the world, Africa, everywhere, pull yourselves and bring us together so we can bring the world together with what is needed most of all in life today, love."

Wonder wasn't the only music legend to make an entrance at the 2025 Met Gala, as fellow Motown alum Diana Ross also shut down the carpet in a massive train of her own. Making her first appearance at the event in over 20 years (her last was in 2003), the Supremes singer pulled up in a glittering, floor-length silver gown and a wide-brimmed, feathered white hat.

"Well, there was not a plan. Everything was really, really at last moment. My son persuaded me, 'cause I'm actually on tour," Ross, 81, told Vogue red carpet livestream host La La Anthony of her decision to make an appearance, referring to her son (and date for the night), Evan Ross.

"If you ever had pictures of the inside of the train, it has the names of all my children, and my eight grandchildren. Everybody's name is embroidered in that," she added of the look.
