Sydney Sweeney's Met Gala look is an important nod to a Rat Pack legend | The Mary Sue
Sydney Sweeney's Met Gala look was a connection to her new film, directed by Colman Domingo, and is an important part of Hollywood history.
This year’s Met Gala theme had many talking. Superfine: Tailoring Black Style had stars in beautiful suits, iconic looks, and bringing history to life. As is the case with Sydney Sweeney’s Met Gala look.

As always, Zendaya’s look was absolutely breathtaking, Janelle Monáe’s take on the theme was gorgeous, and co-chair Colman Domingo’s stunning look. But Sweeney’s look was a nod to her new film she’s starring in with David Jonsson that Colman Domingo is directing. That film details the love affair between actress Kim Novak (Sweeney) and the Rat Pack’s own Sammy Davis Jr. (Jonsson).
Her look caused quite a stir with some online not understanding her reference, thinking that Sweeney was simply just recreating a classic Hollywood look. The dress code for the night was “Tailored For You” and was a “nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear,” according to Vogue. So criticism of Sweeney’s dress for not being a nod to menswear is apt but I do love that she represented the film she worked with Domingo on, especially since it is a piece of Hollywood history we do not often hear much about.
Novak’s relationship with Davis is an infamous one that shows the darker parts of Hollywood. At the height of the “golden” age of Hollywood and the studio system, Novak and Davis fell in love with each other as Novak was starring in films like Vertigo and Davis was already famous for his connection to the Rat Pack.
But despite Davis’ fame as Black man during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, he still faced threats for his relationship with Novak including the Mafia threatening Davis for his relationship. Frank Sinatra, who was close with Davis, was even roped into the situation all because Davis and Novak wanted to be together. Their interracial relationship was revealed by a gossip columnist who claimed the two were going to get married and it, in turn, had Harry Cohn threatening Davis.
The film, called Scandalous!, will unpack the racist backlash to Novak and Davis’ relationship and it is a lesser known story from the Rat Pack era, one that I do think is important when looking at race in Hollywood and how even one of the most successful and well known Black singers and actors of the 1950s was threatened for his romance with Novak.
While on the carpet for the Met Gala, Sweeney spoke with Vogue on the carpet about the dress and the nod to Novak. “I always feel that [Miu Miu] just brings such beautiful stories to every dress,” she said. “So this is actually paying homage to Kim Novak, and I’m doing a movie with Colman Domingo … so we wanted to really just bring that to life.”
So while yes, I think that there were more apt looks on the carpet, I do think that Sweeney’s look is a brilliant way to pay homage to Novak, bring attention to Domingo’s directorial debut, and it gives me an excuse to talk about the Rat Pack.
