‘Quite sad’: Rory ‘honeymoon’ turns dark; Bryson flop ‘no one saw coming’ — US Open Talking Points Round 2
‘Quite sad’: Rory ‘honeymoon’ turns dark; Bryson flop ‘no one saw coming’ — Talking Pts
Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau grabbed the spotlight for the wrong reasons as only three players are under par at the halfway mark of a brutal US Open at Oakmont.
American Sam Burns leads at -3, while Australia’s Adam Scott is only three shots off the lead after a second straight even par round of 70.
Once again the thick rough, sloping fairways and lightning-fast greens made for a nightmare day for the majority of the 156 strong field as several superstars lowered their colours.

McIlroy continued to give the cold shoulder to the media as he also let out a club throw and a club smash after errant shots as he appears to be off kilter.
DeChambeau’s title defence ended before the whips truly get cracking as he missed the cut with a shock late afternoon meltdown, but for those who did scrap their way into the weekend, things are looking up.
Here are the big talking points from the second round of the US Open.
Rory THROWS club in horror round 2 | 00:37
‘DUDE, YOU ARE FAR FROM GOOD’: RORY SAGA ROLLS ON
Rory McIlroy showed the fighting spirit of a champion to make the cut, although his other antics have been anything but.
The Masters champion launched his club over his head in anger after pulling his approach into the rough at the par 5 12th.
He smashed a tee marker with a club at the short par 4 17th after again pulling a shot left of the green.
Despite being weighed down by his frustrations, McIlroy managed to get it together to birdie the last and ensure he had a weekend tee time, making the cut by a shot at +6.
Unsurprisingly, for the second straight day, and for the sixth consecutive time at a major championship, he declined to speak to the media.
“When a USGA official approached him about his availability, he walked from the scorer’s room to the clubhouse without stopping, saying merely, ‘No, I’m good.’,” Golf Digest’s Dave Shedloski wrote.
“Dude, you are far from good.”
Besides from McIlroy saying he was annoyed about the story of his driver being found to be illegal getting out in the lead-up to the PGA Championship, it remains a mystery what McIlroy’s current gripes with the media are.
The funny thing about it all is that his rounds of 74 and 72 are far from disastrous, when you compare to a host of big names including his rival Bryson DeChambeau, who missed the cut as defending champion.
McIlroy horror start to US Open round 2 | 00:54
At nine shots behind leader Sam Burns, McIlroy could still make a charge across the weekend if he can catch fire with the aid of an earlier tee time and a softer golfer course due to driving rain late on Friday.
But everything just appears to be off with the Northern Irishman.
He even made the bizarre step prior to the US Open of skipping Jack Nicklaus’ The Memorial Tournament for the first time since 2017, without even a call to the 18-time major champion to let him know he was withdrawing.
Nicklaus had taken the time to sit down with McIlroy, listen to his plans for every hole and offer words of wisdom before his triumph at Augusta National in April.
While McIlroy has often spoken fondly of the history of the game, and respecting its customs and traditions as well as making moves like agreeing to play in the Australian Open later this year to boost the profile of a historic tournament, his recent choices seem to counter his past behaviour.
“These are not the exemplary actions of one of golf’s biggest stars, a veteran player who has been a flag bearer for the PGA Tour, who is rock-solid, certain-as-death-and-taxes pick for the Hall of Fame with his five majors and 40 combined career wins,” Golf Digest’s Dave Shedloski wrote.
“The past two months could have been a sweet honeymoon period for McIlroy after such a scintillating and inspiring Masters victory, the win he had been dreaming of nearly his whole life. For some reason, he is choosing to miss out on what should be a golden moment in his life and career.
“It’s odd and perplexing and actually quite sad.”
"Turned his back" - Rory brushes media | 03:47
‘NO ONE SAW THIS COMING’: BRYSON BUNDLED OUT
Oakmont was a far cry from Pinehurst a year ago for Bryson DeChambeau.
His second round of 77 took him to +10 overall and he became the first defending champion since Gary Woodland in 2020 to miss the weekend at the US Open.
DeChambeau last missed the cut at a major at Royal Troon last year, but that was a blip on the radar of being an otherwise guaranteed contender.
He finished in a share of second at the PGA Championship last month after famously locking horns with Rory McIlroy in the final pairing on Masters Sunday.
Bryson's confusing hole 4 interaction | 01:17
That was a rematch of DeChambeau’s victory at Pinehurst, his second US Open crown, and he also finished second at last year’s PGA and tied sixth at the 2024 Masters.
It is a formidable record but the chest thumping, macho man confidence the LIV star possessed throughout most of those performances was absent at Oakmont.
He crumbled at crunch time, with a horror front nine, his second nine of the second round, that included four bogeys and a double bogey to crash out of the tournament.
Commentator Luke Elvy said it had “been a startling performance, no one saw this coming”.
The clues may have been in DeChambeau’s major misses this year with his irons letting him down repeatedly at Augusta National and Quail Hollow with his immense driving power and excellent putting papering over those cracks.
His strengths alluded him howeverat Oakmont, he ranked 64th for strokes gained off the tee and 124th for strokes gained putting in the second round.
It prompted DeChambeau to head straight to the range, despite knowing his tournament was done, and bash balls in the pouring rain to try find answers.
Whether he found them or not, we will not know until Royal Portrush next month.
‘REMEMBER THE GOLDEN RULE’: RELIEF ON ITS WAY
Oakmont beat up the world’s best once again on Friday with only three players under par at the halfway mark of the tournament.
Denny McCarthy (+4) labelled the five-and-a-half hour Oakmont rounds as “a punch in the face” with the search for balls in thick rough, drivable par 4s and mind scrambling reads on the greens inhibiting pace of play.
Sam Burns showed that it does not have to be all doom and gloom with his stunning five-under par round of 65, while Australia’s Jason Day was not far behind with a 67.
But all 67 golfers inside the cut line at +7 or better will be thankful for the downpour that flooded the course late in the day, even if it made for an anxious night for the likes of Philip Barbaree, Jr. (+6) Chris Gotterup (+5) who were on their second last and last hole respectively when the horn blew.
Several of Oakmont’s fairways resembled a river only an hour after play was suspended, and while the drenching of the course, may lead to mud balls, it is set to make scoring easier over the weekend.
“This rain, it’ll take so much of the bite out of it,” former professional turned commentator and analyst Brandel Chamblee said on Live from the US Open.
“The scoring average has been around 75 the first couple of days. Wouldn’t surprise me tomorrow if they get around 72.
“And it wouldn’t surprise me if someone came out and shot 65 or 64.”
Former European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley added: “Remember the golden rule: a firm golf course is difficult for the pros, a soft golf course is easy for the pros.
“Even one as difficult as Oakmont.
“So, I’m expecting a better scoring average over the weekend and I’m expecting guys that normally sit that exam so much better than the exam we’ve had the first two days, which is an alien exam, let’s call it for what it is.
“It’s an alien exam to what the PGA Tour is and now it’s going to be moving to more of a PGA Tour set up, which may bring those top players back into their comfort zone a little bit.”
