Lorraine: Dr Hilary provides an update on Ranvir Singh
Lorraine's Dr. Hilary Jones has delivered an update to viewers on Ranvir Singh's health after the TV presenter was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery on her appendix. Ranvir announced earlier today that she had started suffering with stomach pains after filming Lorraine on Wednesday, with the star eventually being rushed into surgery at midnight on Thursday.
Andi Peters has been standing in for the presenter on Lorraine since she was taken ill - and today, the ITV programme gave an update on how Ranvir is doing. Speaking to stand-in host Andi Peters, Dr. Hilary said: "She's put out on Instagram that she had a ruptured appendix last week and she's doing much better now but it was obviously serious.
Dr. Hilary Jones opened up about Ranvir Singh's hospital dash
"If an appendix ruptures then it's peritonitis, that's a major sepsis condition and potentially life-threatening so she obviously had the surgery, she's recovering and we wish her a speedy recovery."
Andi added: "She said to me that she had been in pain for a couple of days...it comes on quite quickly. She did this show on Wednesday and then Thursday - boom."
Dr. Hilary also explained that appendicitis is very individual, with some suffering no symptoms while others are in intense pain. "It usually starts with generalised abdominal pain which localises down to the righthand side, low down in the abdomen.
"If the appendix ruptures, clearly that's a major emergency. It's unusual - it used to be very common, one in six people used to get appendicitis in their life but now it's much less common for reasons I don't fully understand."
He added that despite the medical drama, Ranvir will make a full recovery. "She'll be back here, back where you are, very shortly," Dr. Hilary told Andi.
In Ranvir's Instagram post, she revealed that she started feeling a "sudden stomach ache" at 10:30am on Wednesday after filming Lorraine. "I stay in bed all day. Turns out I had a ruptured appendix and had urgent surgery at midnight on Thursday!
"Woke up 5am on Friday morning, high on anaesthetic and certain I could get into work to host the show as normal [laughing emoji].."
She added: "Pretty nasty few days, the bacteria had spread and infected my blood etc and told to take this week off by @jadeens I'm sore and shuffling around, can't drive for a week, and no exercise for 4 weeks (! ) so really it's the boredom that will kill me! Ps. Anyone else have this horrendous shoulder pain afterwards? It's mad isn't it!"
Lorraine airs on weekdays from 9am on ITV1 and ITVX.
