Mayo votes for change to skorts rule at historic Camogie Congress
The county board was part of the 98 per cent majority who voted to add shorts to the sport’s official attire
The Mayo Camogie Association was a part of an historic evening for Gaelic games yesterday (Thursday, May 22), as they were part of the overwhelming 98 per cent majority who voted to add shorts to the official playing attire of the code.
At the Special Camogie Congress last night, county board delegates from around the association gathered to discuss the amendments to be made to rule 2.6.b, which stated that a ‘skirt/skort/divided skirt’ must be worn in games.

The debate reared its head once more earlier this month, breaking outside the sporting sphere and attracting the attention of politicians and international media.
After weeks of debate and conversation, all eyes were on Croke Park, as delegates, including those from Mayo, were given the opportunity to vote for change.
The result was a seismic one, with a resounding majority voting to allow the players an option to choose between shorts and skorts, with the rule coming into effect hours after the vote.
In order to decide whether to vote for or against the only motion on last night’s Clár, Mayo Camogie polled 362 respondents, with 97 per cent voting for choice on the matter.
“Mayo Camogie are delighted with the outcome,” Mayo Camogie told The Mayo News. “Our players were given the opportunity to vote, and we fully support them in their decision.”
“We look forward to seeing our girls head out in their future matches, feeling comfortable and happy, in whatever they choose to play in, be that skorts or shorts.”
Those sentiments were echoed by Camogie Association president Brian Molloy.
"We are pleased to announce that delegates have voted by an overwhelming majority in favour of giving players greater choice in their playing attire.
"From midnight tonight, each individual player will have the option to wear skorts or shorts, adding choice while maintaining the professionalism and uniformity of our team kits in both colour and design.
"I want to sincerely thank our incredible volunteers for their ongoing support over the last few weeks, and to our delegates for voting on behalf of over 120,000 members, including 94,000 playing members."
